Unlike Auckland or Wellington, Nightlife in Christchurch is quite conservative, despite its size. But you'll still find bars open until around midnight, plus a casino and theatres.
Christchurch Nightlife today tends to centre around the pop-up bars that have been springing up ever since the 2011 earthquakes. With so many established hostelries having to relocate or rebuild, residents has to find a quick way of obeying their thirst. Just like the 'new' restaurants, there is now a plethora of shipping containers in the CBD that have been converted to lively wine bars, pubs and night spots. Some of the theatres have had to relocate to temporary premises, but the casino marches on. Resort towns like Lyttleton, Sumner, Akaroa, Aoraki/Mt Cook and Hanmer Springs, will close early, especially out of season.
