The Brown Family History - New World Supermarket
The Brown Family History New World Supermarket -
The Brown family history in the grocery industry goes back at least 4 generations in New Zealand. My Great Grandfather and Great Grandmother immigrated to Belfast near Christchurch in the late 1880’s
On a picnic to Spencerville beach my Great Grandfather drowned trying to save one of his sons who also drowned and my Great Grandmother had to return to Belfast without a husband and one of her young sons.
To support her family she started a small grocery store in Belfast near to where the Harrington's bar & restaurant is situated today. She continued to run this store until her other sons grew up and returned from WW1. My Grandfather then took over the running of the store with one of his brothers. The business became known as Brown Brothers Belfast and traded as an independent corner grocer.
My Father, Ken Brown and his cousin came into the business around the end of WW2. They took over from my Grandfather and ran the business until 1964 when they built the first Belfast New World in the building now occupied by Harrington’s.
My Mother and Father purchased Rangiora New World which was then in Victoria Street in 1977 and they traded there until 1982 when a new store was built on our current site. The current building has been extended twice since being built, first in 1995 and later in 2011.
I started working with my parents, Ken and Veronica in 1984 and I gradually took over as they retired. I have been privileged to serve the people of Rangiora and North Canterbury over the past 30 years and look forward to doing so in the future.
