Description
Board the Christchurch Gondola cable car and enjoy panoramic views over the Canterbury Plains, city, harbor, and Southern Alps as you ascend Mount Cavendish in the Port Hills to 445 meters above sea level.
At the summit, explore the Discovery Ride, a presentation detailing the region’s history. Refresh at the Red Rock Café before or after walking or biking on the surrounding nature trails.
Note that during summer months (November to March), especially when cruise ships are in port, the Gondola can be busy, potentially causing wait times at boarding points.
The Gondola is located outside the city center, approximately a 15-minute drive from central Christchurch or 10 minutes from Lyttelton Port. Transport is not included in the ticket and must be arranged separately.

- Arrive anytime between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM
- Public bus #8 runs from the central city bus interchange (Cnr Colombo & Litchfield St) to the Gondola. Round-trip bus tickets can be purchased onboard with cash only
- The 10:00 AM time is automated; arrival is flexible within opening hours
- Expect possible wait times during busy periods, especially cruise ship visits
