Being the largest city in the South Island, Transport in Christchurch is efficient. Metro buses operate in the CBD, and the area is well served by long distance buses and trains. The Main South Line and North Line both pass through the city.
The good infrastructure of Christchurch Transport makes it one of the easier cities to reach and get around. Although many people still use their cars in the CBD (car rental firms are everywhere, especially near the airport), more people are making the effort to go green – very apt for the 'Garden City'. Christchurch is quite flat, and a network of cycle paths are being implemented to make the most of this. Otherwise, the Metro and Shuttle buses will get you to most places around the city. You can get the Coastal Pacific (formerly TranzCoastal) train from Christchurch to Kaikoura and Picton, and the famous TranzAlpine service through the Southern Alps.
