Tour Description
The tour begins in Franz Josef, also known as Kā Roimata o Hinehukatere, departing north along State Highway 6.
Lake Ianthe is the first stop, a site surrounded by hills, native podocarp forests, and a flax swamp. It is a habitat for endangered species like the Great Crested Grebe.
Next is Hokitika, a coastal town known for its black sand beaches and driftwood. After a photo stop at the beach to view the Tasman Sea, guests may explore local shops or join the group for an optional visit to Hokitika Gorge, famous for its turquoise waters and native forest backdrop.
A brief stop is made in Greymouth at the Information Centre for guests connecting to the TranzAlpine train to Christchurch, which can be booked separately.
The tour continues to Cobden Breakwater, a beach break known for powerful waves against a rock breakwater.
At Otira Gorge Lookout, also called Death's Corner, guests can view Arthur’s Pass National Park and the Otira Viaduct, a vital part of the pass’s road access.
Arthur’s Pass Village offers an hour to either walk to Devils Punch Bowl or relax with a coffee and explore local shops. The guide will advise on activities based on weather and time.
Lake Lyndon, located at Porters Pass, is a favored spot for jetboating, birdwatching, and swimming.
Castle Hill, or Kura Tāwhiti, is a significant geological site known for inspiring Middle Earth™ scenery and nearby film locations. This stop is unguided, allowing independent exploration.
The tour concludes with arrival in Christchurch, entering the Canterbury region after a full day of travel and sightseeing.
Additional stops for toilet breaks at Greymouth and Cobden are included only if guests are booked on the Greymouth to Christchurch TranzAlpine train.
