The tour begins in Franz Josef (Kā Roimata o Hinehukatere), heading north along State Highway 6.

Lake Ianthe (5 minutes): Surrounded by hills and native podocarp forests, this lake features a large flax swamp home to endangered wetland species like the Great Crested Grebe.

Hokitika (1 hour 30 minutes): Known for its rugged black sand beaches and driftwood coastline, there is a photo stop at the beach to view the Tasman Sea. You can explore local shops or join an optional trip to Hokitika Gorge.

Hokitika Gorge (1 hour): This location is known for its striking turquoise waters contrasted against native podocarp forest. Various lookout points provide multiple perspectives. The track is easy and undulating.

Cobden Breakwater (5 minutes): A short drive from Greymouth, the beach break with a rock breakwater creates powerful waves, ideal for photography.

Greymouth and the TranzAlpine: Arrival at Greymouth Train Station marks the start of the train journey to Christchurch.
