Description
The tour begins by traveling west of Christchurch along the Great Alpine Highway across the Canterbury Plains. After 50 minutes, there is a short break in the rural town of Darfield, where you can try fresh New Zealand cuisine at the Darfield Bakery and pick up food for a picnic lunch.
Continuing towards the Southern Alps, the next stop is Lake Lyndon for morning tea before arriving at Cave Stream Scenic Reserve.
At Cave Stream, your guide provides caving gear and a safety briefing. The 600-meter limestone cave follows an underground river and takes 45 to 60 minutes to complete. Inside, crystal clear water flows through large chambers and over small waterfall steps. The cave narrows to a standard hallway width, but there is always space to stand upright.
After caving, enjoy hot drinks and a picnic lunch at the car park with mountain views. A short drive then brings you to Castle Hill/Kura Tawhiti, where your guide explains the site's spiritual, recreational, and geological significance. Time permitting, you can explore the limestone boulders before returning to the car park.
On the return trip, stop briefly in Springfield to photograph the giant doughnut and learn its history from your guide. The tour concludes with a drop-off at the Lyttelton port meeting point.
