Awe-inspiring scenic nature safaris out onto the Wild side of Banks Peninsula. See the Peninsula's turbulent volcanic past from inside the ancient crater to the wild time eroded coastline of the outer flank.
This Pohatu 4WD Scenic Nature Safari manages to capture the very essence of New Zealand's unique natural heritage, in one magical adventure tour. With a pick up from beautiful Akaroa just after lunchtime, you'll be whisked away on a four hour safari to the Wild side of Banks Peninsula.
Make the most of the many photo stops en route, including the high pass of crater rim with the sea invaded crater stretched out below, the spectacular time eroded volcanic coastal cliffs of the outer flank at Akaroa Heads and Lighthouse reserve, and a Wander through the dream-like red beech forest of Tutakakahikura Scenic Reserve which is home to many native bird species and where five species of tree-ferns can be found. You will learn of endemic species protection and view the Banks Peninsula Tree Weta only found in this small area.
Your experienced guides will teach you all about lizard, penguin and bird conservation, and even treat you to tea and muffins at historic Flea Bay sheep farm and Pohatu Marine Reserve. Pet sheep will run to greet you and eat out of your hands if you wish.
After this your guides will take you on a guided walk through the penguin colony to see penguins during their breeding season and share with you the life in a penguin colony.
There is also a special 2-hour tour available to cruise ship passengers, from Akaroa Harbour. Slightly shorter than the standard safari, the tour focuses on the Penguin colony during breeding season (until mid-February). After February, the main body of the trip centres around the other wildlife, forests and landscape of the area. Part of the tour includes a visit to the working sheep farm where sheep are happy to feed from your hands.
Accommodation options are also available for visitors who wish to stay longer and make the most of the other attractions in the area, such as the Evening Penguin Tours and Marine Reserve Sea Kayaking. There are three different cottages, all with outside bathroom facilities, but cosy interiors and a fantastic, safe swimming beach nearby - the ideal base from which to explore beautiful Pohatu.
