Canterbury is rich with a mix of cultural, scenic and entertainment activities. Attractions in Christchurch are everywhere, and not everything has to cost money, with such natural beauty all around.
Christchurch Attractions are still very much a reason to visit, despite the 2011 earthquakes. Most of the city is up and running again, with exciting plans afoot. Sadly, the main city attraction, Christchurch Cathedral, is no more, although a a temporary 'Cardboard Cathedral' is now an attraction in its own right. If you only have a few days in the city, check out the Botanical Gardens, the historic tram and punting on the River Avon. There are several museums and galleries to visit, and the family favourites of the Antartic Centre, Orana Wildlife Reserve and the cable car gondolas. If you'd like to explore Canterbury, highlights include whale watching in Kaikoura, French culture in Akaroa, the wine of Waipara and the adventure of the Southern Alps. Take a cruise around the east coast, or go hot air ballooning over the Canterbury Plains.
