Best Glacier Activities in Mount Cook

Local Recommendations from our My Guide Christchurch team

Canterbury is fortunate to have the Southern Alps right on the doorstep. For Glacier Activities in Christchurch, head west to Aoraki/Mt Cook. Stand on a real glacier, and marvel at the beauty of nature.

Christchurch Glacier Activities are mostly centred to the west of the Canterbury region, around the Tasman Lake and Tasman Glacier in Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park. Here, you can glide by huge icebergs on a boat tour – an increasingly popular activity. The Tasman Glacier is 25km long and is slowly floating towards Lake Pukaki in the south. Guided tours will get you as close to the glacier by 4WD, then you can continue on foot. Be amazed at azure blue ice pools, and in the summer months you'll even get the chance to swim in secluded kettle holes. Having lunch beside such an awesome creation of nature, is surreal yet unforgettable. Most tours leave from Christchurch, or you can drive yourself to Aoraki/Mt Cook Alpine Village and join an existing expedition (Hermitage Hotel). Skiers can go glacier skiing by arrangement – experienced skiers only.
