If you're fond of climbing or even some serious mountaineering, you're never far from a peak in Canterbury. Head west towards Arthur's Pass and Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park, or closer to Christchurch, around Mt Hutt.
Beginners have plenty of operators to help them get started on the more accessible mountains. But for serious altitude beasts, you can't really get better than having a darn good go at the country's highest peak, Aoraki/Mt Cook. Alternatively, try a trip out to Mt Sumner, Mt Sefton or Mt Tasman. There's also abseiling, simpler rock climbing and canyoning available, at various spots throughout the region. Methven, Hanmer Springs and Lake Sumner all have plenty of mountain activities to keep you occupied, and are nearer to Christchurch.
If you're booking your trip to Christchurch last minute, we have you covered. Below are some of the top tours and experiences.
