Christchurch Scenic Railways really show off the best of this region's natural landscape. From the city, you can board the TranzAlpine Express, regarded as one of the world's great train journeys. From Christchurch, there are nine stops before the terminal at Greymouth on the west coast. Sit back and drink in the lush Canterbury Plains, before heading up into the Southern Alps. Highlights include the beautiful Waimakariri River gorge and Arthur's Pass National Park. Alternatively, jump aboard the Coastal Pacific (formerly called TranzCoastal) which takes in six stops along the scenic sea track to Picton. Get on or off at Rangiora, Waipara and Kaikoura along the way. This is one of the most popular - and scenic - ways of travelling to three of Canterbury's most attractive towns.
