Coin operated barbecues available for public use make The Groynes a great place for a family party.
Named after the large concrete blocks that jut out into the Otukaikino Creek, The Groynes is a recreational area just north of central Christchurch, with the creek as its central feature. Cut off from the Waimakariri River during work in the 1930s, the creek now forms several lakes and waterways through The Groynes.
Families can enjoy the pedal powered boats which can be taken on the water, or enjoy watching model boats sailed by the local club. Trout fishing is allowed in some of the lakes, but anglers must get a permit first.
One popular feature of the park is its extensive dog park. Four legged friends are well catered for with two agility parks, a swimming area, bush walks, and an exercise area all of which can be used without a lead.
The large open picnic areas make an ideal spot for an outing with family and friends. A playground offers another chance for children to burn off some energy, while for more serious walkers and runners the five kilometre return Waimairi Walkway provides the opportunity to enjoy some fresh air. Pack a picnic and spend an afternoon in the sunshine.
Shorter walks around the lakes are suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs and for young children to walk.
Visitors can see many species of duck including the New Zealand scaup and other birds including kingfishers, swallows, and pukekos can be spotted by keen birdwatchers.
