Directions to Akaroa Sailing Cruises
Experience the best of Akaroa with Akaroa Sailing Cruises.
Your two and a half hour cruise will take place on a stunning, 47-foot, 1946 ocean sailing yacht - Manutara. This classic Ocean Sailing Yacht has been carefully maintained to keep its original, vintage charm. Powered by the strong New Zealand winds, the yacht operates without any diesel exhaust polluting the beautiful harbour, or any engine noise disturbing the animals.
Throughout the cruise, your skipper Ray will point out local wildlife and provide information about the unique creatures residing in the harbour. Keep an eye out for Hector Dolphins and Little Blue Penguins.
There is also plenty to learn about the harbour's cultural history and geography. The Akaroa residents that make up the crew are well versed in the surroundings and will tell you about characters who live here and brief history of the region.
Sailing enthusiasts will enjoy the chance to have a hands-on experience. All guests are invited to have a go at Tacking, Gybing setting sails, Trimming sails, Grinding, Tailing and Hemming while on the classic yacht. No experience is necessary: Akaroa Sailing Cruises.'s crew will show you the ropes. Alternatively, you can simply sit back, relax and watch the action.
Each cruise follows a course that visits four or five selected sights in Akaroa Harbour. Due to wind conditions, courses may vary from cruise to cruise. No matter what though, Akaroa Sailing Cruises tries to include an upwind leg, a downwind leg and some typical blue water cruising. This ensures that every guest will have the chance to try different aspects of working a yacht.
Cruises depart twice daily, at 10:30 and 1:30, from the end of Akaroa Main Wharf.
Adults: NZ$75 per person
Children: (5 years to 12) NZ$37.50
